The Priest Barracks: Dachau 1938-1945 – Guillaume Zeller

This non-fiction choice of the week looks at the three barracks in Dachau concentration camp where Catholics priests, protestant ministers and two imams were imprisoned. Meticulously researched, Zeller’s work pays tribute to the exceptional courage and holiness of some of the barracks’ inmates but is not afraid to ask difficult questions either. This is the story of the thousands of Catholic priests who were imprisoned by the Nazis for remaining true to the Gospel, many of them never to return.

The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde

Condemned as offensive to public morality when it was published in 1890, Wilde’s terrifying masterpiece tells the tale of Dorian Gray, a vain young man whose portrait ages in his place, leaving him free to enjoy eternal youth and an increasingly hedonistic lifestyle.

Silent Angel Antonia Arsalan

This newly-translated novella, recently released by Ignatius Press, tells the story of a ragtag group of survivors fleeing the Armenian Genocide. Based on true events, this book is an elegy to the 1.5 million Armenian Christians murdered by the Turks in one of the darkest chapters of the twentieth century. It is also a tribute to the powerful Armenian women who risked everything to save their ancient culture from destruction.
